Composers, producers and artists will gather at Carriageworks over two days in June for Open Frame. The festival, presented by Room40, will highlight various stages of sonic intensity and experimentation with a stacked program that includes, amongst other highlights, the world premiere of an Occam (XXIX) composition by French electronic music composer Éliane Radigue, commissioned especially by Carriageworks.
In addition to Radigue, who is arguably France’s most important female electronic music composer, Open Frame’s schedule also includes 60 year old ambient artist William Basinki who will be premiering a new piece for the festival, the legendary Charlemagne Palestine presenting his only Australian piano performance in 2018, Coil member Drew McDowall performing music from iconic record Time Machines, avant-garde artist Pan Daijing, and Sydney-based artist Gail Priest.
Dedicated to really exploring each artist incredibly distinctive and accomplished art, Open Frame has been described by curator Lawrence English as a “meditation on states of sonic intensity”. Guests will be exposed to “the beauty of William Basinski, the transcendence of Charlemagne Palestine, the performance approaches of Pan Daijing, the focus of Éliane Radigue’s compositions, and hallucinatory qualities within the music of Coil’s Drew McDowall”.
As one of the undoubtable highlights, Radigue’s Occam XXIV will build on a legacy of works created for specific performers, named for the theory of philosopher William of Ockham which states that the simplest option is always the best. The way it works is that there are no scores, only verbal instructions. In the past, her Occam works have been held of universal acclaim, even receiving 5 stars in The Guardian UK. This particular Occam will be a world premiere, performed by leading Australian composer, musician and Head of Music at Monash University Cat Hope, who travelled to Paris to be instructed by Éliane.
