SXSW Music Interview: Sam & Nick of The Soorleys (Newcastle) on the band’s first US tour, recording in Nashville & more!

Newcastle folk-pop band The Soorleys have been making their mark on the US, spending some weeks through March touring and experiencing some iconic cities for the first time, definitely from an interesting perspective. From hitting ballrooms in Kansas City to recording in Nashville, through to arriving in Austin for their first ever SXSW, the family band have had quite the trip.

Sam and Nick sat down with Larry at the Aussie BBQ to chat about how the trip had been treating The Soorleys so far, especially having to adapt a six piece band to the rushed mentality SXSW is quick to impose on any touring artist.

“It was definitely hard for us,” Sam admits. “We’ve got six people on stage and six different instruments. It was intense, but it was awesome afterwards.”

“We started in Kansas City,” he says of the band’s US tour. “We got invited to play a folk festival there, which was probably the wildest thing, apart from SXSW, that I’ve seen. You get an official on the bottom floor in ballrooms but then at 10pm at night, on floors five, six and seven, every room turns into a venue. It’s like a frat house party! It was insane.”
