Cold War Kids are back in Australia, hitting our festival scene once again with a killer live show at Bluesfest in Byron Bay overnight. Larry sat down with vocalist Nathan Willett on site at the festival to catch up on what’s been happening with the band since we last saw them out this way a few Falls Festivals ago – with new music in the works, a new guitarist in the band and more touring on the cards, it’s an exciting time for Cold War Kids, for sure.
“I think that so much of what everybody’s doing has some basis in blues.” Willett says of the genre’s impact on their music. “We had a big box of the Alan Lomax recordings, all those field recordings and I think there’s always a root there, whether its in the Velvet Underground or Captain Beefheart or stuff that we started listening to in the beginning of the band, very rooted in the blues.”
“It’s a weird time,” Willett says of the current creative phase Cold War Kids are in. “We had all this momentum; we did the record Dear Miss Lonelyhearts, Maust and I did this side project called French Style Furs and then we did the Hold My Home record, which has done insanely well. We’re on to the next thing, we have a few new songs that we’re wanting to mix right now and put out in the near future.”
