Album Review: San Cisco – The Water (2017 LP)

The coolest kids on the block and possibly the sweetest kids of the bunch – Western Australian band San Cisco are back with The Water, a serenade of rich insistent pop tunes. Lets dive in.

The band began their string of melodic love dedications back in 2010, with their first EP Golden RevolverLed by storyteller Jordi Davieson on vocals, Scarlett StevensJosh Biondillo and Nick Gardner were introduced to the world, and fans were brought along to hear their story through contemporary life. The band made their tracks visible to JJJ listeners on Triple J Unearthed back in 2011, featuring “Girls Do Cry” and “Awkward”, which caught commercial success and gave the band the ability to cross demographics. They scored two spots in Triple J’s Hottest 100 in 2012, and since then their music continues to catch waves on a worldwide level.

Two years after releasing their second album Gracetown in 2015, San Cisco have taken a leap of faith back into the airwaves and produced their new titled LP The Water – a mix of everything groovy and lively about the Australian band.

Their first single “Slo-Mo”, described as a dance-friendly singalong, brought all the pieces together for the bands comeback and teased listeners with what was up next.

In what can only reflect the bands maturity over the last three LP’s, The Water embellishes on a journey throughout different scenarios of life, whether it be a love story or simply a night out on the town. Built upon rhythmic choruses in your usual San Cisco way, fans should expect to hear a new sound too – involving your good ol’ synthesizer.

After almost eight years of making music, change is simply natural for musicians like San Cisco. However, fans should be cautious of welcoming the bands move to another sound – with a weird mixture of Daft Punk and even Tame Impala… and a hint of Cisco upbeat spirit.

Over 10 tracks making up the waves of sound, listeners should expect a good variety of different tunes for every occasion. The bands current single “Hey Did I Do You Wrong?”, can only be described as a gentle summer groove that focuses around love and relationships in the bands life. You’ll also hear “Sunrise”, “That Boy” and “Make Me Electrify”, which all have a up-beat rhythm which makes perfect for a good pick-me-up.

A highlight from The Water, “Kids Are Cool”, brings back the same funk-pop vibes from San Cisco’s previous sounds. Offering fans a similar catchy sound to stand out tracks like “Fred Astaire” and “Too Much Time Together” from their previous LP’s, it’s refreshing to hear a band like San Cisco creating music that is so unique but yet recognisable to their listeners and fanbase.

San Cisco have not disappointed fans yet again. However, it’ll be interesting to see what the band have up next for the future. Possibility Scarlett Stevens with a lead vocal role? Who knows. We’ll just have to wait.

Review Score: 7 out of 10.

The Water is out now.
