The State of Affairs: BIGSOUND secures funding for the next four years, Melbourne Music Week announces 2016 Hub & more

This week in the music industry: Melbourne Music Week announced the main venue for 2016, BIGSOUND secured a four year funding deal with the Queensland Government, and the first round of showcasing artists were unveiled for the 2017 instalment of SXSW.

BIGSOUND secures new funding

After a successful run for the 15th year in a row, BIGSOUND have secured a new funding deal with Arts Queensland and Australia Council, which will support the festival for the next four years.

Starting from 2017, BIGSOUND will receive  $350,000 per year from Arts Queensland, and $280,000 per year from the Australia Council, for the next four years. This is a significant increase from the $184,000 the festival received in funding this year from Arts Queensland. 

First round of showcasing artists announced for SXSW 2017

This week, SXSW released a sneak peek into their 2017 program, with the release of their first-round of showcasing artists. So far, Australian acts that are set to feature in the festival are Vera Blue, Alex Cameron, Alex Lahey, Demi Louise, Polarheart, Running Touch, Oscar Key Sung, Throttle, and Wafia. 

More artist lineups will be announced in October. The full list of international artists currently confirmed to showcase at the festival, can be found HERE.

Melbourne Music Week announces their 2016 Hub

Earlier this week, Lord Mayor of Melbourne Robert Doyle announced the State Library Victoria as the official hub of Melbourne Music Week 2016. The iconic Melbourne landmark is one of the longest operating free libraries in the world,  and is also celebrating its 160th birthday this year.

Featuring an all-female lineup of performers including Julia Stone, Ella Hooper, Mama Kin, and Elizabeth RoseMelbourne Music Week’s opening night (Friday November 11th) will be held in Queen’s Hall, the state library’s original reading room.

Melbourne Music Week 2016 will run from 11-19th of November. The full 2016 program will be announced on Tuesday October 4th.

Live Nation and Flight Centre announce partnership

Live Nation Australia and New Zealand have revealed they have brokered a multi-year partnership with the Flight Centre Travel Group – which makes Flight Centre the official concert travel package partner. They join existing brand partners in National Australia Bank, American Express, Telstra, Europcar, Spark and Hilton Hotels and Resorts.

The partnership means that music fans will be able to access travel packages to events and concerts across Australia and New Zealand. Flight Centre will be able to combine airfares, accommodation and car hire with preferential access to tickets and VIP concerts.

UNIFIED announced five $5000 grants to music industry creatives

At BIGSOUND last week, UNIFIED announced that they will be awarding five $5000 grants to people in the music industry, aimed at driven young creatives who work in music but don’t necessarily play. The grant extends to those in the fields of journalism, photography, videography, web development, graphic design, app building and more. For more information on the UNIFIED Grant, head here.

EMC 2016 released the first line-up of artists showcasing at EMCPlay. Curated by Dave Ruby Howe, the electronic music party will include performances from local electronic artists such as Alice Ivy, The Tapes, Tina Says, Paces, and more. Early bird tickets for the mid-week party are available now.
