The State of Affairs (27th May 2016): AIR CEO announces his resignation, IMS release their 2016 industry report & more!

This week in the music industry: the International Music Summit released their 2016 business report focusing on the electronic music industry, Sounds Australia revealed new plans to further promote Australian music overseas and Dan Nevin, CEO of Australian Independent Record Labels Association announced his resignation from the independent trade body.

International Music Summit business report 2016

According to the 2016 International Music Summit (IMS) business report, within the last three years, the global electronic music industry’s worth has increased by 60% from $4.5 billion in 2013 to the current worth of $7.1 billion.

Global consumption of electronic music has been on the rise over the last couple of years, with subscription streaming services playing a major role in the rise of the genre. In 2015, streaming of EDM tracks in the UK increased by a whopping 107%, while Americans alone streamed around 15 billion EDM tracks in 2015.

The IMS report also showed that in Spotify, one of the world’s largest music streaming services, was dominated by EDM artists in 2015. The record for the most streamed song of all time on Spotify is currently held by American EDM group Major Lazer’s song “Lean On” featuring and DJ Snake, while the title of Spotify 2015 breakout artists was given to Norwegian EDM producer Kygo.

The 2016 report concluded that streaming services will continue to heavily influence the the music industry, by highlighting the streaming revenue model as the most important driver of the electronic music industry’s future success.

Sounds Australia headed to Europe  

Following a successful run at the Great Escape 2016 in the UK, Sounds Australia have announced that they will be supporting more than 50 local music businesses at industry events in the Netherlands and France.

For the first time ever, in partnership with the Australian Music Centre, Sounds Australia is currently representing over 30 Australian classical music artists and businesses at the 2016 Classical:NEXT event in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The event running from 25-28th May focuses on uniting international classical music professionals through a series of live performances, conferences, expo and film screenings.

From 3-6 June 2016, the organisation will return to Cannes, France for the seventh consecutive year to participate in the international B2B Midem music conference. Along with music industry representatives from 35 other nations, Sounds Australia will be hosting a stand at the trade show, where Australian music professionals will have the chance to network with international industry representatives.

AIR CEO announces resignation

After nearly two years of leading the Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR), Dan Nevin announced his resignation as Chief Executive Officer on Monday 23rd of May. The former CEO has resigned from his position as he relocates to the UK with his family.

In a statement released by AIR, Nevin highlighted the importance of independent labels and businesses in Australian music, and said that he will “continue to wave the Australian indie flag from the UK and will always be available to support any Australian independent artists and labels as required”.

The Chairman of AIR David Vodicka, said that the organisation will begin the search for their new CEO shortly after Nevin’s departure on June 15th 2016.

Feedback, a music conference for young people, will be held on Monday June 13th at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art. Hosted by Triple J’s Dom Alessio, the conference will include guest speakers such as Thelma Plum, the Thundamentals and Andy Bull. Ticket information can be found HERE.
