The State of Affairs (11th Mar 2016): Industry Celebrates Women, Music Licensing Simplified, and New Flexible Grants Announced.

This week in the music industry Australia celebrates the women who keep the wheels turning, a brand new licensing platform opens the industry for newcomers and grants for all.

Music Industry Celebrates Women In Music

girls to the front

Tuesday March 8 was International Women’s Day a time to recognize, celebrate and appreciate women the world around and the incredible contributions they make, the music industry especially  took the time to bring girls to the front.

Triple J especially put their foot forward programming an entire day of female presenters starting with Linda Marigliano for Breakfast, Zan Rowe for Morning, Veronica and Gen Fricker on Drive, KLP on Good Nights and Karina Utomo of High Tension for The Racket.

The HACK program also laid out a bunch of statics on women in the industry, among them 31% of public board members on peak music bodies in Australia are women, 45% of artist managers are female and only 20% of Independent Australian Record Labels registered with AIR are run by females. All the statistics pointed to a real disparity between the genders in the music industry.

“When girls go to school, up to year 12, there seems to be a greater representation of women is music. In choirs, musical theatre, singing , school bands,” said Director, Member Relations at APRA AMCOS, Milly Petriella.

“And then somehow, from that point from 18 going into the work force it completely swaps around,” Petriella told HACK.

Songtradr Launches Simplifying Music Licensing and Rights Management

songtradr

On Monday this week Songtradr has launched a consumer-friendly B2B platform simplifying the sometimes complicated business of music rights and ownership.

The platform is initially targeting young independent musicians working with no label or publisher giving them the opportunity for their music to be licensed, used and paid for by industry professionals including games developers, film producers and advertisers. The platform also welcomes  independents labels and publishers with larger catalogs.

“We see ourselves as connecting the fragmented world of music rights in one place,” said Songtrdr CEO, Paul Wiltshire.

The platform makes use of a proprietary variable pricing calculator helping songwriters, artists and rights holders determine the market value of their content and the rates at which it can be sold. The licensing rates are automatically generated by factors such as media usage, budget, term and territory.

Among experts assisting the developement is Phil Quartararo, former CEO at Virgin Records, Warner Bros and EMI, as well as key adviser attorney Gary Stiffelman, who has represented and negotiated for prominent recording artists, songwriters and producers.

New Flexible Arts Grants Program Announced

DCAGrents

Over this week we’ve had new grants announced from APRA AMCOS and few changes to outstanding grants from Western Australia’s Department of Culture and the Arts.

Starting off, APRA AMCOS have announced composers will be eligible for up to $30,000, with a total of $100,000 per annum, to provide funding for composers to create commissioned work that is complemented by an exploitation program designed to maximize the life of the work.

It is expected composers will collaborate with ensembles, orchestras, producers, recording companies, broadcasters, festivals and other parties to propose the writing of a work that will be guaranteed multiple exposures.

To apply applicants must be an Australian or New Zealand composer and must be a member of APRA as well as the Australian Music Centre.

The claims will be assessed by the viability of the proposed project, the quality of the work and the quality of the plan for the life and the reach of the work. To apply head HERE.

Over at the Department of Culture and Arts the grants program for 2016 has been announced with changes allowing for individuals, groups and arts organisations to apply in five different categories with two sub-categories: under $15,000 and over $15,000.

The Creative Development program will support the development and growth of sustainable, professional creative practice with grants available for a range of projects and activities intended to advance the creative.

The Commercial Development grants program will assist projects with the objective of increasing sales or business revenue, building audiences, accessing new markets or increasing market share, promoting or strengthening business/brand profile; or developing strategic business or commercial significance.

The Community Engagement program will fund projects promoting the participation and active engagement of Western Australian communities in arts and culture. Projects eligible for these grants must deliver  artistic and social outcomes for the community, provide opportunities for communities to create and share their stories, encourage communities to engage and express their culture and increase the relevance and accessibility of the arts.

To be eligible for the Aboriginal Arts program projects must promote or facilitate greater engagement of Aboriginal communities in the arts, encourage the expression of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal culture, individuality, spirituality and empowerment through the arts. They must also encourage the involvement of Aboriginal arts expertise, skills, knowledge and resources, support longer term skills development for Aboriginal artists, support Aboriginal cultural maintenance and deliver artistic and social outcomes for Aboriginal communities.

The final category is the Scholarship and Fellowships program bringing all of the departments fellowships together in a single program. Each has its own handbook which provides information about the application process and eligibility.
