The Adelaide Festival reveals Sufjan Stevens, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and more for 2016 program!

The 2016 Adelaide Festival program has been launched today, with David Sefton and his team unveiling yet another eclectic line up of Australian and international musicians, visual artists, theatre and dance legends set to come to South Australia next February and March. In Sefton’s fourth and final year as Festival Artistic Director, he’s pulling out the big guns across the realms of music, art, dance and theatre that has continued to push boundaries.

The legendary and influential Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch will bring their dance-theatre production Nelken to Australia for their first trip Down Under since 2000, while the National Theatre of Scotland and the National Theatre of Great Britain is set to offer the ambitious and epic 11-hour long trilogy of The James Plays at the Adelaide Festival. Making its Australian debut, the trilogy explores the lives of the three Stewart kings against the 15th century Scotland backdrop.

The music program of the Adelaide Festival sees the return of the popular UNSOUND Adelaide event which this year sees experimental, post-punk, techno, dubstep, grime and more fused and explored over two huge nights, featuring the talents of:

Alessandro Cortini of Nine Inch Nails fame
Barry Burns of Mogwai repute

Johann Johannsson
Kangding Ray

Paula Temple
Tralala Blip

Lorenzo Senni

Berlin visual artist Lillevan and Portuguese filmmaker Pedro Maia will also be a part of UNSOUND Adelaide this year, putting their craft in amongst the music, offering some stunning visual backdrops.

The 2016 music program will also highlight the Thebarton Theatre as one of the city’s iconic venues, with the Hindmarsh venue set to host a wide range of musicians this festival, including Sun O))), Magma, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Sufjan Stevens.

Tectonics also makes its Adelaide Festival return, combining electronic music composers with classical and orchestral performances. Curated and conducted by Ilan Volkov, the series this year includes premieres of orchestral works by The Necks, Jim O’Rourke, Annie Hsieh and Cathy Miliken, performed by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra on the first night, while night two will see new experimental electronic, vocal and chamber music presented by the likes of David Shea, Klaus Lang, Speak Percussion and more!
