Lollapalooza Day Two: Post Malone, Bruno Mars, The National, Brockhampton and more highlight Friday’s best

The second day of Lollapalooza was jam packed with much variety and some of the hottest names in music today.

The three headliners couldn’t have provided more variety and something for everyone. Dillon Francis played the EDM main stage Perry’s, while Bruno Mars and National played the main stages on the North and Souh ends of the park.

Here is a quick roundup of the highlights of Day 2.

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars exploded on the scene in the early 2010’s and has been a hit machine ever since. His number one hits like “24K Magic,” “Locked Out of Heaven,” and “Uptown Funk” thrilled the massive Friday night crowd.

With loads of pyrotechnics, both on and above the stage, Mars had his usual theatrics.

The show was filled with many highlights but never gained true momentum due to the multiple breaks Mars took on stage. Still, it was a fitting Friday night headlining show.

The National

There are few better things than Matt Berninger’s voice. The soulful low voice is as soothing as anyone’s but also can be as haunting and strong as anything.

While they drew about 10 percent of what Bruno Mars did, The National went for quality over quantity. Ripping through a solid 18 song set spanning their many albums and hits The National played one of the best sets of the festival.

Post Malone

This was the set I was most looking forward to on Friday. The Texas rapper, singer, songwriter is one of the most interesting artists making music today.

His chart top success has made him a phenomenon and I was so curious to see how he would perform live.

What I was taken aback by the most is his humility, vulnerability, and joy in stage. It seems he loves performing and was genuinely taken aback by the love of his fans.

His vocals were solid but were masked by several layers of backin vocals that kept his true talent from shining. Like his tattoos covering his face the backing vocals covered the true singer and person he is and instead showed more of what he is trying to be.

I look forward to seeing him grow as a musician and develop more confidence in his talented voice. He is a star on the rise that deserves every bit of acclaim.

Brockhampton played one of the most energetic and off the Wall sets of the festival. This young, very green band needs a little bit more work on stage to master the art of a great show but the talent and energy is definitely there. Chase Atlantic was definitely my biggest discovery of the day playing the smaller BMI stage. Their sound was outstanding and the angst and throwback emo-rock took me back and was a welcome sight. Bebe Rexha took the audience on a tour of her hits with “Me, Myself and I,” and “Meant to Be”.

Saturday’s highlights will include The Weeknd, Vampire Weekend, Tash Sultana, St. Vincent and more. Stay tuned for all the Lollapalooza coverage!
