Five weeks to go until the Barunga Festival kicks off; 2016 theme is ‘Celebrating Women’

The Queen’s Birthday Weekend will see the Barunga Community host some amazing live music with this year’s Barunga Festival, one of the biggest festival events in the NT.

Welcoming people from all over the world, the Barunga Festival this year has got a diverse and strong program of events and activities planned for the weekend, showcasing some incredibly talented local and national performers under this year’s theme of ‘Celebrating Women’.

The festival emphasises the importance of cultural exchange and collaboration and therefore offers festival goers a unique and special experience by heading along. A smoke and alcohol free event, the Barunga Festival is family-focused and offers punters the opportunity to camp out under the stars and engage in some awesome activities. Situated on Central Arnhem Road about 70km southeast of Katherine, spend your weekend with the likes of the following:

Local elder Margaret Katherine describes Barunga’s culture program as being about, Sharing cultural knowledge; the beautiful sites that ancestors walked on, bush berries, medicine plants, herbs, how the sun tells the time, how paper bark is used as a sleeping blanket or a cup. We invite everyone to hear stories about our country.”
