The 2017 APRA Music Awards hit Sydney’s Convention Centre Grand Ballroom overnight to celebrate the songwriting achievements of some of our best artists and for D.D Dumbo and Flume in particular, the night proved to be extra special.
With his acclaimed single “Satan”, D.D Dumbo was awarded the APRA Song of the Year gong. A choice cut from his 2016 album Utopia Defeated, “Satan” soon rocketed to the upper echelons of many ‘Best Of’ lists for the year – unsurprising that the track resonated as well with the APRA board.
Taking out Songwriter of the Year as well as Most Played Australian (and Dance) Work awards last night was Flume, whose tune with Kai – “Never Be Like You” – stood out as the most played Australian work and dance song of the year.
Troye Sivan also took a win during the ceremony, taking away the Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year award for his debut album Blue Neighbourhood, while Grammy winner Sam Dixon was acknowledged with the Overseas Recognition Award.
The APRA Awards, hosted by Julia Zemiro, also honoured Archie Roach as the recipient of the 2017 Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music, while Paul Kelly, Dan Sultan and A.B. Original paid tribute in closing the night with a performance of “Took The Children Away”.
