If you haven’t yet heard of Jesswar, now is the perfect time to get yourself acquainted. The Brisbane-via-Fiji rapper has been generating serious momentum around her music over the last year; we first came across her in later 2016, her tune “Blue Roses x Red Violets” hooking our attention immediately.
Since that discovery, we’ve been stoked to see Jesswar’s profile continue to rise, locking down support slots for the likes of Tkay Maidza, Lady Leshurr and David Dallas. With an EP in the pipeline, things are about to get even more ambitious and exciting for Jesswar, as today we announce her signing with Golden Era Records for the distribution of her debut EP release!
“I’m excited to be amongst inspiring, talented people within our industry and to feel pushed by my peers.” she tells us. “I’ve been hungry to take my music to a higher level and am really grateful to have the opportunity to make this happen.”
Now sitting alongside fellow Pacific Islander Aaradhna on the GE distribution roster, Jesswar comments on the changing perceptions within hip hop, particularly in Australia, and what is exciting her the most about being a part of it.
“I have loved Aaradhna’s music since I was very young so to now be among talent like hers is a massive honour. The game is changing and it’s exciting to see other sisters not only coming up but shining. This pushes me to work harder and hopefully play more all black female line ups that’s the dream!”
While new music is still a little ways off, Jesswar fills us in on where we can see her popping up next.
“Shooting my next video for the upcoming single is exciting me,” she says. “I’m really ready to lock in visuals as strong as the sound. I’m also looking forward to my new EP, as I’ve explored new sounds, lyrics and energy with this one, so seeing how that is received will be interesting. All up, I feel like my horizons are getting broader so I’m feeling really positive about the coming year!”
Jesswar has been added to the official AIR Awards after-party in Adelaide on July 27th, set to showcase alongside the likes of K21, Birdz, Purpose and more on the Golden Era x Bad Apples label event – hosted by A.B. Original – at Rocket Bar. Check out the Facebook event here.
