Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones throw in a few more greatest hits to kick off Desert Trip weekend 2

The second weekend of Desert Trip – aka “Oldchella” – has kicked off in India, California, on the site of the iconic Coachella music festival. The first night, as it did last weekend, kicked off with recent Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan and iconic UK group The Rolling Stones.

Bob Dylan played a largely unchanged setlist compared to the first weekend. All songs and their orders up until the encore were unaltered, and included the likes of “Rainy Day Woman #35 and 12”, “Tangled Up In Blue”, “Ballad of a Thin Man” and “Make You Feel My Love”. This week saw the inclusion of “Like A Rolling Stone” as the first song in his encore which preceded a Cy Coleman cover of “Why Try To Change Me Now” to close out his set. Last weekend saw a one-song encore of 1963’s “Masters of War”.

The Rolling Stones propelled with an immediate wave of glee as the riff to “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” signalled their entrance to the stage. Last week’s opener of “Start Me Up” was moved to the 1 hour and 40 minute mark amongst a tidal wave of hit after hit – “Miss You” into “Gimme Shelter” into “Start Me Up” into “Sympathy For The Devil” into “Brown Sugar”. Last weeks Beatles cover of “Come Together” and The Stones’ own “Wild Horses” were replaced in favor of “Angie” and “Paint It Black”.

Mick and Keith at two different times congratulated Dylan on his Nobel Prize from earlier this week. Mick also commented on the state of the modern music festival: “Festivals have changed a lot. It used to be hotdogs, now its culinary experiences… and now there are AA meetings backstage”. Touché Sir Jagger!
