Backstage at Laneway Festival Singapore, East India Youth looks ahead to Australian dates!

British artist East India Youth is days off his first ever Australian shows, with the St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival coming up this weekend. One of the buzz names of 2015, his music has brought him acclaim from many and his live shows have been received as popularly. Backstage at the Laneway Festival in Singapore, the man also known as William Doyle, admitted to not quite knowing what to expect from his Australian debut, but he’s keen to explore.

“It’s hard when you’re not familiar with the territories,” he said. “You don’t know what’s going to differentiate between them. I’m sure the experience is going to be very different to what it’s been like here. When you tour so much, the shows blur into one; the people who you work with are great and the audiences are different, but the performance aspect is kind of the same every time. I’m more looking forward to exploring the cities as much as I’m looking forward to performing.”

On how his music has developed over the last few years particularly, East India Youth explains his progression as the electronic musician many will know him as today, following on from a solid period of time fronting bands.

“I started making music at home when I was about 13 or 14,” he said. “That was before I was in any band. I was using the computer to record songs and I just started, by accident, to make electronic sounds with it – I was just experimenting with the software. I’ve been doing that all the way through and I’ve also started to be in bands and be a frontman, playing guitar and stuff. When my last band ended, I thought, “I’m going to go back to making more electronic stuff,”. It was more expressive to me.”
