Alex Lahey wins $25k Levi’s Music Prize off the back of BIGSOUND

Alex Lahey has locked down $25,000 today, making Wednesday’s hump day vibes much, much easier to swallow. Winning the annual Levi’s Music Prize, as deliberated by a panel of international judges, the Melbourne songwriter took out this year’s second round of the competition via her connection with BIGSOUND.

The competition, established by the music conference and the denim brand, supports musicians financially; aiming to give them a prize to spur on the momentum already building behind them, the $25,000 obviously goes a considerable way for any artist looking to the next step of their career, whether it’s international travel, recording or the release of new music. For Lahey, being an independent artist makes winning such a prize all the more thrilling.

“I am extremely honoured and grateful to have been awarded the Levi’s® Music Prize. As an independent artist, having this support and encouragement is so motivating and will help get this project overseas for more touring and recording opportunities. Always support local artists.”

Stella Donnelly won the inaugural $25k prize on the final day of BIGSOUND 2017, as part of Levi’s commitment to offer a total annual prize pool of $100,000 over three years.

Applications are now open for the third round of the Levi’s Music Prize, closing on March 10th. The competition is open to artists who have showcased at BIGSOUND between 2013 and 2017 – head here to submit and get in the running!
