Single of the Day: The Byzantines “Jamaica” (2016)

The Byzantines are a band who we’ve been following since their early days – their adoration for the English Premier League and sharp take on Brit-pop music easily becoming two of the most recognisable elements of their general swag.

In new single “Jamaica”, we see the Adelaide band stride out into a new phase of their musical career – the first taste of new music since their self-titled EP had them gigging solidly around the local circuit and interstate through 2014 and 2015. Michael Pietrafesa has developed considerably as a vocalist and while his style is reminiscent of Tom Meighan a la early Kasabian, he punches through with as much attitude and drawl that stands out early on.

“Jamaica” is perhaps a slower composition than other Byzantines tracks we’ve heard in the past, but it’s no less catchy or attention grabby. There’s a steamy, brooding vibe that comes through that kicking bass line and fusion of electronics and guitar that makes this one an instant ‘yes’ from us and we can’t wait to hear more.

Check The Byzantines out when they launch “Jamaica” in Melbourne and Adelaide this June:
