Single of the Day: Sharon Van Etten “Not Myself” (2016)

Sharon Van Etten has dropped a chilling new single in “Not Myself”, available now for fans to purchase and also, donate to a worthy cause. The ballad, released in memory of the victims of the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting, is emotional and raw. As she croons over some almost mournful piano, images of loss and the fear of loss ring true.

“The victims were only trying to be themselves and be comfortable and safe in their surroundings.” she has written about the shooting. “That safety was violated out of fear and with a gun… In the memory of those trying to be safe and be themselves, I hope we can all come together to help prevent another massacre like this and end gun violence.”

Available for purchase on her Bandcamp for only $1, there is also a pay what you want option available, with the money raised going toward the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, a fund established to educate and improve understanding about gun violence and its causes in the US. Ultimately, the aim of Everytown is to reduce gun violence by developing policies and spreading the message to the US public, an idea we can totally get behind, even from the other side of the world. You can find out more about the cause HERE.

Check out “Not Myself” today though – another stunning piece of music from a songwriter who always nails it.
