Single of the Day: Phebe Starr “They Keep Telling Me” (2017)

Phebe Starr‘s new single “They Keep Telling Me” is a bright new burst of indie pop that will land the artist well and truly on your radar, if she isn’t already. Working with Swedish producer Fredrik Odesjo, Starr’s latest release came as a result of a horrible songwriting experience.

“I wrote this track after the worst co-write I’ve had in my life.” she explains. “Two sexist jerks told me to sit in a room and shut up while they wrote a hit for me. It was humiliating and demoralised the purpose of creativity and the hard work I’ve put in to creating a life filled with it. It’s horrible to have been treated as a stereotype or having to live up to one to be accepted. I wrote this song about my quiet rebellion from those expectations which seem to chase me through life.”

The end result is urgent and glossy, packed with emotional depth. Starr is authentic as they come and should be recognised more – here’s hoping 2017 is the year where that momentum continues to whip up around her. “They Keep Telling Me” is a part of Starr’s new EP Chronicles, out March 31st.
