Single of the Day: Jesswar “Savage” (2017)

Well, damn. Jesswar is definitely not playing round. “Savage” is the latest from the Brisbane MC; as her rise within the local hip hop game is only gaining more strength behind it, this may well be the single to solidify her presence as not only an artist to watch, but definitely not one to be messed with on the mic.

The invite is clear. All the ‘bad bitches please move to the front’; Jesswar channels some grit and explicitness in getting her point across. The music industry is a hard one for a woman to navigate, much less the hip hop industry, but with artists like Jesswar (and those mixing in the Brisbane hop hop scene in particular) doling out bars like the ones heard on “Savages”, the boys best clutch their pearls.

“Being Fijian my people were portrayed as “Savages”,” Jesswar explains. “So using that term was definitely thought out in reclaiming that terminology and more like a war call. I feel confident that I’ve been working hard a for a long time so I wanted to come out with the ferocious nature that has helped me get to this point. Using the word cunt is important to, this is another word I’m reclaiming and embracing. This industry is brutal as a woman so being resilient and tougher than the next dude is necessary to succeed.”

Jesswar hosts A Weekend in The Gardens in Melbourne tomorrow (Saturday, November 17th). Don’t miss her in action!
