Single of the Day: Angel Olsen “Sans” (2017)

For Angel Olsen fans, this week is going to be a very good one. The release of Phases will see a collection of much-anticipated B-sides, rarities and demos from over what has been a glorious songwriting career. Which brings us to our choice of today, “Sans”. Originally a home demo Olsen recorded in 2015, the song is instantly arresting, scooping the listener up in a musical hug that refuses to relent. Olsen’s vocals are paired with a guitar that yearns on record.

Written between Burn Your Fire and MY WOMAN, Olsen describes “Sans” and its significance for her at the time of its creation.

“…Something short and simple, but about a big thing in my life: travel and what it can do to the psyche. When you’re out there and you’re working and moving so fast, it’s difficult to really imagine a time when you were fully recognised and known. You know, it’s hard enough to be known when you’re around! But then there are those people in your life that know you and don’t need you around all the time to be or feel close – I suppose it’s about that too.”

Phases is out in Australia via Inertia on Friday – definitely cop this one to hear Olsen in some of her most candid moments.
