Music Video of the Day: Funeral Suits “Tree of Life” (2016)

Funeral Suits are a band out of Dublin who made quite the impact with their 2012 debut album Lily of the Valley, an energetic and dramatic introductory release that set the four piece up as a band to watch as the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Editors and The Maccabees were also surging forward.

They’ve cut their teeth at SXSW, Reading and Leeds and The Great Escape notably, off the back of their music but in the years following Lily of the Valley‘s release, the band hadn’t released much in the way of new material for fans to sink their teeth into. Until now.

The single that’s caught our eye is the band’s new one, “Tree of Life”. While the vocals are forceful, the arrangement playing around (initially) with some spaced out indie rock, before ramping up the percussion and keys, creating a whirl – a chaotic and engaging final result edging over the five minute mark.

The music video for “Tree of Life” matches the chaos, exploring the concept of the seven deadly sins. As the band states online, ‘The main character, the sinner, is realising his own mistakes. Or maybe he discovers the sins of society?’.

Written, directed and produced by the Crooked Gentlemen crew, the clip is dark, unsettling but undoubtedly, a great watch.
