Music Video of the Day: Black Lips “Crystal Night” (2017)

I’ve been watching a lot of Twin Peaks recently, and my first reaction to the opening scenes of the new Black Lips music video was that this could easily be cut from The Roadhouse at the end of one of Lynch’s new episodes.

Anyway, I digress. “Crystal Night” sees its visual narrative take place at some kind of dance steeped in old-timey prom traditions, as the starring couple are broken up repeatedly – this is the story of them trying to come back together. There’s a surreal humour about it all; even when you see the male protagonist being rolled into the boot of a car, his date chasing after it; the band’s music cuts through any dramatic overtunes and adds a brief comedic tone to it all.

As Black Lips frontman Cole Alexander says of the song, “Crystal Night” demonstrates that ‘love will always trump hate’. The Sean Lennon-produced single is taken from the Black Lips’ latest record, Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art?, out now.
