At this year’s Splendour in the Grass, a special performance honouring the late Szymon and his acclaimed posthumous album Tigersapp will be taking place, featuring a band comprised of Szymon’s family and friends. The album, celebrated following its release, stood out strongly with critics in 2015, scoring an ARIA Award for Best Contemporary Album and an Australian Music Prize nomination, as well as being featured on many “Best Of” lists at the end of the year.
When yesterday’s Splendour announcement broke, much of the news headlines were set aside for the major international headliners (understandably), though this tribute performance is definitely not one to be missed if you’ve been touched by the beauty that has been Tigersapp. The band, featuring Szymon’s siblings Eva, Dom and Kubush Borzestowski and brother in law Josh Irwin, will also be joined by a number of guest vocalists from some of the country’s biggest bands and acts.
Coinciding with the release of the performance’s details, a new video for Tigersapp cut “Floods” has also been released, created by artist and filmmaker Casual Psychotic – check it out below!
The opportunity to honour their brother and his artistry in this way is something the family has been moved by, says Eva. “We are thrilled to be offered this amazing opportunity to honour our brother and friend Szymon and his music on such an incredible platform. We are so excited to perform, but never imagined we’d be performing Szymon’s music without him. We simply want to do justice to his art and revel in the beauty of his incredible music.”
The ‘In Loving Memory of Szymon’ performance will be taking place on Saturday, July 23rd at Splendour in the Grass. More details about the special guest vocalists, stage and set times are still to come.
