“Treat them like queens until they disagree,” Georgia Maq sings, though in the pointed tones of her voice, the words are delivered with extra potency. “[and] never reflect to think, ‘Wait, maybe the problem was me’…”
The Melbourne trio’s new single “The Opener” is the first we’re hearing from the highly anticipated sophomore Camp Cope album and man, they’re not holding back. Like we’d have ever expected them to, anyway. Painting a passionately honest and unfiltered account of what it’s like to be undermined, demeaned and mistreated as women in music – musicians in particular – “The Opener” is a breath of fresh air that is no doubt going to bring keyboard warriors out in force, but give a bit of a boost of confidence and solidarity to each listener who can identify.
