The Attention Seekers explain “Disco Biscuit Tip-Rat Dropkick” and take us through the making of Itchy

Melbourne group, The Attention Seekers, have been out and well, enjoying the attention that has come with recent electrifying live shows. Their new EP Itchy has been received well out on the live front but the band isn’t content to be resting on any laurels – continuing to push forward off the back of current single, “Disco Biscuit Tip-Rat Dropkick” (Say that 10 times…), the band is definitely sitting pretty as a band to be watching.

With the tour rolling out into July, we recently threw some questions to the band to find out more about how the last few months has been treating them.

Congratulations on Itchy – can you tell us where the inspo came for the EP name and how long this one has been in the works for?

Dan: The name may seem like we have just come up with a random word and said, ‘Yeah! That’s pretty cool…’ but I think for it to really make sense, you are going to have to wait a while until the second EP rears its head. It may even take you ‘til the third!

How have the shows been treating you so far?

Tom: The shows have been great thus far, pulling bigger numbers than we expected. When I was younger it was just my parents and two of my three friends that came down to the shows, so we have been really fortunate lately. We are pretty over the moon.

How would you say the band has been developing as a live unit and in turn, how people have been responding from day dot ’til now?

Dan: Since we started playing shows with new and old material, the feedback was that we had a really strong stage presence, which came pretty naturally to us. We have come to realise that although we want to keep the party going, it is probably more important to play the notes than stage dive mid song, so we are still developing our craft, to be tighter without trying to lose the entertainment factor. It’s a work in progress.

New single “Disco Biscuit Tip-Rat Dropkick” (again, stellar name) seems to be garnering some great attention too – did this one stand out immediately as a single choice?

Tom: Well it’s the quickest, and people don’t know us. They don’t even know if they like us. They could very well hate us, but at least it will only take them less than two and a half minutes to make up their minds on us with “Disco Biscuit Tip-Rat Dropkick”. And it shows what we are about – a heavy subject, played fun and fast, taking the good with the bad. And it’s fun to sing along to. Disco biscuit tiprat drop kick, we all know one…

What has been one significant thing you have taken away from the process of writing and recording Itchy – any type of lesson you’ll take into the next EP or album process?

Dan: It took some arguments to get it right this time, we started it quickly, only six or seven months of playing together was when we started to record, so the number one thing I would say is more preparation, We found that a few of us were a bit controlling and sometimes couldn’t really take constructive criticism. So the main thing that will most likely resonate through our future EPs will be more dedication to rehearsal and crafting the music before we step into the studio. Also, that I’m the best singer/dancer in the band.

What’s coming up next for The Attention Seekers, past this tour?

Tom: We have about three EPs of material ready to work on and mix and match to make each EP all as strong or stronger than the previous, plus I still have a lot of people I need to say, “In Your Face!” to, so we are going to keep churning them out and have a dance and a sing for as long as people are interested.
