Josh gets to know some more about US blues rock group Thaddeus Anna Greene, the Cleveland band who are currently celebrating the release of their new EP Bleed. Since forming in 2010, the band has been causing impressive amounts of buzz in the US and come to us fresh with this new music in tow – find out some more about, potentially, your new favourites.
Tell Australia how the band came together and why they should be listening to you!
The band came together when TJ came back from Chicago in 2010 with a gang of songs that he’d written in school and was ready to record them. He knew Anthony from elementary and high school so he sought him out for his drumming. That was the start of Thaddeus Anna Greene. Then Ryan Augusta was added for a thicker sounding rhythm section. Matt Derubertis is the newest member of the band he’s super solid, super diverse, and sort of obscenely knowledgable about music.
Australia should be listening because our stuff is fresh yet familiar, heavy yet warm, and our songs are about the human experience. I don’t know, listen to it and tell us. All we can do is be humble, honest, and creative.
I can hear new soul like Gary Clark Jr. and old school blues like Buddy Guy in your sound. Who would you say your biggest influences are?
Is songwriting a democratic thing in your band, or do some of you do more than others?< Songwriting is very democratic when it comes to arranging and composing the music. The lyrics, not so much. We know in a very familial and unspoken way how not to step on each others' toes when it comes to creating. So we usually come up with the music collectively and TJ either writes the lyrics on the spot or we sit on the tune for a while until the lyrics are right. We have such a respect for each other in that realm. When Anthony comes up with a beat, we rock with it. Ryan's riffs have been so clutch. When we're in a creative rut, Ryan will just come with some heat right quick to spark the flow up again. Then Matt just knows where to fall into the mix and fit the groove so nicely. We're all quite integral in the songwriting process. What’s on the horizon, what should we be expecting from Thaddeus Anna Greene in the near future?
Well, we’ve got an EP out called Bleed. We’re pretty excited about it because it’s really representative of our true sound. That’s what we want to focus on. Getting people on board with our new music so that subsequent project continue to grow in impact and be received well.
Lastly, the name. It’s a ripper. Where did that come from?
Haha, the same place Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd’s names came from. Ya know?
