Mac DeMarco on touring Another One, making new tunes & more!

We’ve gone and done to Mac DeMarco what we Australians like to do when we see something we like – we claim it. Though our link to the Canadian doesn’t extend to any type of shared heritage or close proximity geographically, all you need to do is witness the response to DeMarco’s live shows – both festival and headline – out this way to get an idea of how the bond between artist and fan has strengthened since his debut Australian shows and the success of both Salad Days and Another One.

Recently back in the country for a run of his own shows as well as festival fun times at the Falls Festival, Mac escaped the scorching heat momentarily and joined us in the air conditioned comfort of a demountable/dressing room for a chat about how everything has been on the road since we last saw him, at the beginning of 2015 on the Laneway Festival tour.

“We’ve pretty much been on tour since the album came out in August,” he says. “It’s crazy. It was all pretty good; South America was crazy, that was the last place we were at. I was exhausted, but then I had a little break over Christmas, so now I feel right as rain!”

With an addition of a keyboardist to the live shows on recent tours, DeMarco admits that it’s provided him with a little more room to move around on stage and take his stage presence to another level – an element of his live shows that fans lap up hungrily every time.

“We’re just having fun,” he mentions. “The guy who is playing keyboard is an old friend of mine, I grew up with him in my hometown. I play keyboard a little more and more as I’m making music now, so it made sense to have a dedicated guy. I’ve got all this freedom and just a guitar again, it’s great! Eventually I’ll just get someone to play my guitar parts and I’ll just frontman it!”
