Interview: WHARVES prepare to make a splash at Port Mac’s Festival of the Sun!

Striking out hot from Lennox Head, WHARVES have had an impressive year. Turning the ears of triple j big wigs with their brand of indie rock music, the group have found themselves on stages around the country alongside the likes of The Delta Riggs and Polish Club, as well as at Splendour in the Grass and the Falls Festival.

Coming up, however, WHARVES have their eyes on this year’s Festival of the Sun. Heading out to Port Macquarie next month, the four piece let us in on what they’re looking forward to the most.

Today we’re talking about Festival of the Sun in Port Macquarie! Firstly, have you played it before? If so, what were your experiences last time? If not what have you heard about the event and what are you looking forward to about it?

Some mates from school used travel down for it every year and come back so stoked on it. Massive party with a killer line up. We are sooooo keen for our first one!

Top 3 things you have to do at the beach, go!

Frisbee (we are gun ultimate frisbee players)
Put on sunscreen, because we are all a bit pasty.
Dig a big hole in the sand then stand in it but try and beat the tide.

Top 3 things you have to do when camping! Go!

Ghost stories around the fire.
King’s Cup
Play ‘Never Have I Ever’

Specifically for those who aren’t familiar with your music, what can we expect from your set at FOTSUN?

Big guitar sounds, and powerful vocals with pulsing beats you can dance to, reminiscent of bands like Joy Division, Interpol and Duran Duran. If you bring Michael Jordan, we will bring the Space Jams.

What are YOU expecting from the crowd at FOTSUN and perhaps more generally the festival itself?

We are expecting some astro-shenanigans and some interstellar outfits. We are bringing some beers from above to share with everyone.

Are there any other acts you’re excited to see? One stage = no clashes!

Dear Seattle, Bad//Dreems, Holy Holy, Meg Mac and Press Club. Actually, everyone is gonna kill it!

Tell me a little bit about 2017 to date for the band? What have been some of the highlights?

We are really stoked with how this year has gone. We got played on Triple J for the first time, got the nod from triple J Unearthed to play Splendour, showcased twice at BIGSOUND, got the offer to play FOTSUN and signed to 123 Agency. We are pumped to be at FOTSUN as it will surely be a highlight for us as well.

Other than FOTSUN, what does the rest of the year hold for you?

We are currently on our Electric Summer Tour playing heaps of shows with some great artists and doing a bunch of writing before jumping in the studio at the beginning of next year.

Festival of the Sun takes place in Port Macquarie from December 7th – 9th. The event is completely sold out, but for more information about FOTSUN, visit www.fotsun.com.
