Interview: UK songwriter Lucy Rose on touring with Ben Folds, Something’s Changing & more

While out in Australia with Ben Folds, British artist Lucy Rose came by our offices in Sydney for a bit of a chat and acoustic performance – check that one out over here.

During our chat, we find out more about why it’s taken so long for Lucy to make her way out to Australia and of course, her first impressions of the country,

“I’m in love with the people, to be honest; I didn’t know what to expect. Everyone is so chilled. …I’ve definitely met too many Brits while I’ve been here; everytime I meet a British person I’m like, ‘I’m not interested in you, I’ve come here to experience Australia’. People swear a lot [and] I’m quite into that, that’s nice.”

Touring her 2017 album Something’s Changing, Lucy delves into the mania that has been her touring schedule, with 2018 supposedly being her planned time off. Then Ben Folds came calling.

“This came through and I was like, ‘Oh my God – Ben Folds is my hero, I can’t not do that,’ and I’ve always wanted to go to Australia. This is massive. …I’m back off tour on the 28th of May. …I played them a lot before the record was out, to try and make sure I was comfortable for the recording of it, that was important for me.”

With the Ben Folds tour opening up the opportunity for fans to get involved with submitting their requests via a paper plane aimed at the stage, Lucy tells us about her love of his music.

“I did ask him, I was like, ‘Do you ever play “Late”?’ and he was like, ‘No – but it’s possible’. I’ve planted the seed, lets see if it grows.”

With Something’s Changing being the album that connected Lucy to the renowned Communion label in the UK, she describes her first connection with the group – not via the music, but via visuals.

“I was making this documentary of Latin American travels, didn’t have a label. I funded this third record and wasn’t really sure how I was going to put it out; the documentary was a big part of it. I went and spoke to Kevin from Bear’s Den, who put that documentary together and said, ‘How did you got about getting it out there?’ and he said, ‘Go talk to Jamie from Communion, because he was a huge part of it.’ I went saw Jamie and showed him what we were doing and a clip of what we’d made of the documentary and he was like, ‘I need to be part of this’….”
