It’s been a long time coming but finally, Danny Harley aka The Kite String Tangle, will be releasing his debut album to fans and newcomers alike. Officially out today, The Kite String Tangle’s self-titled record has been a labour of love, a challenge and a creative journey for Harley, one he told us more about during a recent catch up in Sydney.
“The oldest song on the record is probably five years old, but it’s not like I’ve been writing the album constantly that whole time. I’ve probably been writing it solidly for maybe two, three years, but it’s a long spread. It’s been a long journey.”
“I pretty much wrote three more albums’ worth of tunes. I had a lot of self-imposed pressure; I wanted to create something really great. Something that was honest to me and something that I was really happy with. What made me happy and what was honest to myself kept changing throughout that process. It was really hard to land on something cohesive and be truly happy with everything.”
His return to stages is another event fans are looking forward to from TKST and with a set at Splendour in the Grass on the cards soon, it’s going to be very, very interesting to see how his live production has fleshed out as travels overseas have no doubt influenced the direction of The Kite String Tangle.
“I kept it solo for quite a while and the kind of music I was playing changed and progressed. I feel like I felt a little limited when I was playing more sombre music in live settings because I was so used to connecting with people in an energetic way with my previous band, Pigeon. I think, subconsciously, I missed some of that energy and I think I’ve slowly been incorporating bigger tunes and more dynamic moments through the live set.”
“I really like very dynamic shows that have the sombre moments and then the big, explosive moments. Essentially, I’m trying to be truthful to the music in a live setting and give the audience a real sense of a journey throughout the set.”
