Interview: Louise Burns (Canada) on shunning expectations when making new music & more

Vancouver’s Louise Burns has been a true highlight of the recent Canada Down Under takeover that hit Sydney’s Leadbelly venue earlier this week. The songwriter has a smashing album in Young Mopes to her name and following on from her Polaris Prize nomination, Burns has already blazed through 2017 successfully, and looks forward to a bright 2018.

“It’s been really good.” she says of Young Mopes. “It’s my third record; the one I put out before, I think it was four years ago. It’s been a long time. The sound is kind of similar, kind of changed, but so far it’s been very much well received.”

“I think it’s hard to care about that stuff,” she says of critical response and the pressure that making albums can bring. “It’s really cool that people put you in that category, it’s totally an honour. It’s also like, I’m not going to write an album in order to…I’m not trying to do that. The most successful times I have in music is when I don’t give a shit about anything and so I really didn’t care.”
