Australians are soon to get a taste of Singapore’s eclectic and thriving arts scene, when Singapore: Inside Out takes place in Sydney from November 3rd to 5th. Bringing artists from across the realms of visual arts and music, as well as some culinary boundary pushers, SG:IO is a way for Singapore to bring their cream of the crop out to Australia in bridging the gap and forming new connections between two very different artistic cultures.
For electronic artist Linying, her trip out to Australia for this event won’t be her first time in the country, though it will mark her Sydney debut. She tells us more about how she is anticipating Singapore: Inside Out and what the event means for Singapore’s music community.
What is exciting you the most about coming to Sydney and representing for Singapore?
I’ve never been before, so I’m pretty excited to see what the music scene is like out there and if there are specific things unique to music from Sydney.
Have you been to Australia before and if so, what has been a big drawcard about being able to showcase your music here?
We played Melbourne last year and it was heartening and exciting for me to meet people who’d been listening to and following my music for a long time, and who came out to the shows. I’m just generally excited to be in a new place and to play all these songs.
How has 2017 treated you in terms of the music you have been making?
It’s been a pretty gruelling year, just because I can feel myself moving and changing and so the music I make [changes] with it. It’s like having growing pains and having to adapt to whatever new methods I need to employ in order to express all those new feelings and sentiments I’ve been having; [sentiments] that are naturally so different from what I’ve felt and thought in the past. I think it can only be a good thing though; it’d be so much worse to feel like the same person I was before and to only be able to write about things that I’d already written about, making music that sounded the same.
What do you think an event like Singapore: Inside Out stands to deliver for Singaporean artists, in terms of producing opportunities for networking out in Australia?
I think I’ll only know for sure once I experience it for myself, but I expect it’ll be helpful for Singaporean artists to be acquainted with the equivalent organisations and communities in an industry and creative landscape so different from our own.
How crucial, in your opinion, do you believe events such as these are for musicians?
I think it’s important insofar as a Singaporean musician would benefit from witnessing the mechanisms of an industry that’s been greatly successful in the export of its music to major music markets worldwide, since that’s something that we’ve yet to achieve as a community on such a large scale.
Do you hope to tour out this way in 2018?
Once I get these songs out of my system, I’ll be ready for it all!
