Getting to know AU sessions performer Jordan Léser (Sydney)

Ahead of tomorrow night’s AU Sessions at Hive Bar in Erskineville, the final one for this year, we catch up with Sydney musician Jordan Léser and get to know a bit more about her style. Léser let’s us in on finding her musical identity and those that have influenced her. You can catch her performing at Hive Bar (upstairs) on Tuesday 24th November, entry is free and she will performing as part of a line-up which also includes Caitlin Harnett.

How old were you when you started writing your own music?

13

What was the first instrument you learnt?

Piano

Tell us a little bit about your style – how did you end up falling onto this particular style?

I’d call it dark, cinematic pop. I’ve always been drawn to song’s with strong melodies, honest lyrics and lush production so naturally that’s crept into the kind of music I try to write.

I think finding your musical identity is quite an unconscious process to begin with…maybe you start off as one big mesh-up of all the artists you love and have referenced over the years, and then hopefully something unique comes of it…or not.

Who are your influences?

Some of the main ones would include Kate Bush, Massive Attack, Stevie Nicks, Philip Glass, Lana Del Rey etc. Also writers such as Jeanette Winterson, Murukami and Joseph Campebll.

What is your latest song/album to promote? Tell us all about it

I have no new offerings as of this moment but the next instalment is well underway…

What is your favourite record right now and why?

Jarryd James’ album…perfect driving music.

Who is your favourite Australian artist right now and why?

I love MOVEMENT. Their sound is so warm and seductive, his voice is like honey, and the melodies are catchy yet interesting.

What can we expect from your live show?

Something intimate

What are your plans for the year ahead?

New single, new sounds, new band, and everything in between.
