What Did You Expect? Die! Die! Die! take us through their new EP ahead of their January tour!

What Did You Expect is a rather apt title for the new EP release from the always frenetic and unpredictable Die! Die! Die! The New Zealanders came out the gates swinging with this new collection of material – five tracks of pure noise-rock greatness. Whether you’re drawn to Andrew Wilson furious vocals, the urgency of each chord or piece of percussion, there’s no doubt that the D!D!D! crew have continued to fashion themselves into a act that, frankly, aren’t to be fucked with.

What Did You Expect dropped last Friday but today, Andrew takes us through their latest collection of tunes, including some insights into what it was like working with Rory Atwell on production and Annabel Liddell as a featured guest vocalist!

“I Love Space Travel”

This is a song about meditation, love, being temporary, permanent and not wanting to rust. I hope you can paint a picture for yourself with those things in mind. This was the last song we recorded and almost didn’t make the EP. I’m glad it did. I had to record the vocals in New Zealand for this song because we ran out of time in London and my friend was recording in the other studio when I recorded them. She said I sounded like a dying cat. I hope that’s not the case. Thanks Priya.

“Dark Arrow”

This was the song which made me really, really excited to be playing again. It’s only 1:20 but it’s so fun to play and you can probably tell it didn’t take long to write, but fuck it. I was really worried this would come across badly recorded, but I think Rory captured it really well.

“I Love How You Listen to the Radio”

This song I wrote in Tasmania and was gonna be on the solo record I have been working on. But I played it with Mikey when we started jamming again and realised it suited Die! Die! Die! far more. I think Annabel‘s voice mixes so beautifully with mine and Rory’s at the end of the song.

“Is What It Is”

This is a rather strange song as it’s about growing up and also euthanasia. I think it’s the most New Zealand sounding song we have ever done. The guitar reminds me of Dunedin a lot. I think from this EP, you can tell I am really enjoying playing guitar a lot for the first time in DDD’s 10 years or so! Haha!

“What Did You Expect”

This is the song that got Mikey and I jamming again after taking a break. I wrote it and played it to Mikey and he said it sounded like a good, very different song and we should try and put something together for it. I really love Rory’s bass playing and how he recorded this. Its a sad/happy song about addiction.
