The Killers are definitely back on radar. Their new single, “The Man”, has been released and it’s been described as ‘the most infectious pop song of their already accomplished career’. Some good and obvious PR spin, you might say.
But when you listen to the song, can’t deny it, “The Man” goes in. From the bass to the catchy harmonies, to Brandon Flowers‘ confident and inward looking lyrics, “The Man” is self-aware and very much looking ahead to a bright new chapter for The Killers.
The last album The Killers released came in the form 2012’s Battle Born and it’s fair to say that at least in Australia, it was met somewhat lukewarmly compared to other records to their name. I’m possibly in the minority, but I didn’t mind Battle Born, even it was a far cry from Sawdust or the holy, almost untouchable Hot Fuss. But with each album cycle, you expect the band to develop, incorporate new influences and expand on their artistry; with “The Man”, fans of The Killers hear a band raring to go. Along with the new single, The Killers’ long-anticipated fifth album has been announced, with Wonderful Wonderful now in the pipeline for release hopefully before the year is out.
Australian fans will of course be seeing The Killers back in the country when they play the AFL Grand Final in September (finally confirmed by Flowers today) so hopefully, there’ll be more Australian dates to follow. We’ve not seen the band since their trip out in support of Battle Born as part of the now defunct Big Day Out tour, so it’s a visit well overdue.
With a lot to look forward to, we’ve taken a look at some of our favourite tunes from The Killers – from the iconic “Mr Brightside” era through to the crowd-crushing likes of “For Reasons Unknown”, “All These Things I’ve Done” and newer cuts including “Shot At The Night”. Don’t know about you, but I’m excited for this return; much like I was when I revisited that episode of The O.C. that featured the band performing at The Bait Shop.
