Sydney trio Glades run us through This Is What It’s Like ahead of December tour!

Sydney group Glades has been working their way up Spotify charts and into the hearts of both radio lovers through this year, with singles “Speechless” and “Drive” raking in some huge numbers online. The indie trio are soon to be on the road with their debut EP This Is What It’s Like – a quick east coast tour taking Glades to venues in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Ahead of the tour, the band takes us through This Is What It’s Like to keep that excitement going. Have a read and be sure you cop a copy of the EP for yourselves!

SPEECHLESS

This Is What It’s Like. It’s the stories of you, the stories of us. It’s in the past and what we’re facing currently.

“Speechless” was one of the first songs we wrote when were able to move out of a small suburban bedroom studio, into a proper studio in the city. It was an exciting time for us, we were all growing our capacity as songwriters, and looking back on it now, came out of a time when we were probably lost for words on everything that was going on for us. Our lives were changing so quickly.

The story of “Speechless” is simple; its about being so head over heels for somebody, that they make you lost for words.

HER (LOVING YOU)

The project ‘Glades’ started in March of 2015. We were still discovering our sound in those early days, but “Her (Loving You)” – the second song we ever wrote together –  gave us a defining start. It felt natural, yet focused in its delivery. We all instantly knew that it was a direction we would love to head in.

My feelings go forever, you’re exactly what I needed, even when we’re breaking, I’ll be loving you.

“Her (Loving You)” is a breakup anthem; it’s the situation where you’ve found yourself at breaking point with someone you love, but everything in you still loves them. Everything in you doesn’t want to let them go.

SKYLINES

Take this song at face value and you could think it’s quite upfront about breaking up with someone. But “Skylines” is quite the opposite. It’s a progressive story. You need to listen to the whole song in order to understand what it’s about, not just the chorus alone. But that’s what we love about it; “Skylines” intrigues us, it makes us wonder, it makes us discover.

If you look upon a horizon, it’s like you have a sense that the whole world is ahead of you; it’s like it inspires you to move on from things that seem like they’re the biggest obstacle at the time, because there’s a bigger picture.

SUMMER AIR

What do you think of when the word Summer is thrown at you? Where we’re from, we think of the beach, good times with friends, road trips, food, beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Clear skies where you can see the millions of stars at night. “Summer Air” is a metaphor for all of these things. As life goes on, we all need to move on from something, often to bigger and better things. We hope “Summer Air” warms your heart and makes you feel like you have something incredible to look forward to.

DRIVE

Funnily enough, this was a song that we didn’t think was our best. But everyone we showed believed in it. We knew it was cool, but not cool enough to warrant the success it’s had. We wrote this out of a want to write something positive and meaningful way back in our humble bedroom studio days.

To now see the millions upon millions of people “Drive” has reached, genuinely blows our minds. “Drive” is a love story, a depiction of a strong, flourishing relationship. Its the feeling of being so completely comfortable around someone, the feeling of spontaneous excitement.

I WANT YOU SO BAD

Insecurities are a real thing. We all have them, we all doubt. We can all be self conscious even on the best of days. but it’s up to us on how much we let them consume us. “I Want You So Bad” is one of our favourites. We love the slow jam, almost lullaby feel of the song. It’s about wanting to be with someone but because of insecurities, you think you’re holding them back and that you might not be good enough for them. It’s a journey of finding security within yourself.
