US late night talk shows are a showcase of all-things celebrity, politics, humor, comedy and music. They are often treated as the final thing we see before we go to sleep. With The Late Show with Stephen Colbert debuting in the same 11:30pm slot opposite Kimmel and Fallon – all shows were keen to pull out the big guns in the hope of attracting/retaining viewers.
Our own talk show fiend Lachlan scours the masses of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Late Late Show with James Corden, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Conan and now The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and brings us the list of the top 5 standout music performances from US late night talk shows of last week!
Tame Impala “The Less I Know The Better” – The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (Thursday)
Australia’s most in demand band played their anti-Trevor hit on Colbert last week. Smooth and hypnotic as ever, we still hate Trevor. No seriously, fuck Trevor.
The Maccabees “Marks to Prove It” – The Late Late Show With James Corden (Tuesday)
The Maccabees, yay! Ahead of their December/January Australian tour for Falls Festival, the band stopped by Corden to play the opening, title track off their new album that came out in July.
Talib Kweli “Every Ghetto” – The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon (Monday)
Joined by The Roots and Rapsody, Kweli dropped by 30 Rock to perform a new song from his upcoming collaborative album with producer 9th Wonder, Indie 500.
Florence + The Machine “What Kind of Man” – The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (Wednesday)
Stripped bare to its core, Florence Welch were peakingly alluring and sultry as they played the track off their album “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful” that came out earlier this year. They’ll be back in Australia from early November!
Beirut “So Allowed” – Conan (Thursday)
As I said last week, “for those not aware, Conan is the hip, music guy in late night TV – friends with a lot of musicians and always giving exposure to smaller acts”, well here we go again. You won’t catch Beirut much on TV, but here they are! Here they played the melancholic love-cry, “So Allowed” closing track to their newest, September-released album – ‘No No No’. Ooooft those brass harmonies!
Closing note: FUCK TREVOR
