It’s Friday, I’m In Love: Our favourite videos from The Cure

The Cure are set to deliver some of their largest sets ever seen by Australian fans, kicking off with their appearance at Splendour in the Grass this weekend. The set lists have proven to be extensive, with recent shows on the band’s world tour extending out to four encores, with the song count exceeding 30.

With such a large and beloved back catalogue of music behind them, these gigs are set to be a treat for any Cure fans on this side of the globe and we can’t wait to see how their upcoming headline shows roll out. While we twiddle our thumbs and wait for them to kick off however, we’ve jumped down a YouTube rabbit hole and have been revisiting some of our favourite videos from Robert Smith and co.

closetome

“CLOSE TO ME”

The band plays this classic tune while stuck in a closet on the edge of a cliff. There are finger puppets, great use of camera shots in confined space and great facial expressions by Smith and the band as they try to manoeuvre their way through, even after they’re sent off the edge.

lovecats

“THE LOVECATS”

Wonderfully ridiculous and catchy, The Cure’s homage to cats is brought to the screen in a very literal way here. Stray cats, cat statues, varying forms of leopard and feline print…you name it.

lullaby

“LULLABY”

Brilliantly creepy, this music video isn’t good for those who fear spiders. Or haunted houses. Generally, if you’re not keen on things that go bump in the night, this mightn’t be up your alley.

friday

“FRIDAY I’M IN LOVE”

The Cure match the vibrancy of “Friday I’m In Love” with an equally as joyful and playful music video. There’s hardly any black or dark tones, the band is cheery, there’s dancing, grins – he’s in love!

lovesong

“LOVESONG”

Which then brings us to “Lovesong”, one of our favourite Cure songs but definitely the antithesis of “Friday I’m In Love” in terms of its music video. Smith sits alone in a cave, shrouded in darkness, singing about love’s effect on him.

justlikeheaven

“JUST LIKE HEAVEN”

The band takes to a cliff top again for this 1987 clip – Smith looks slightly disconnected as he sings, before dancing with a ghost on top of said cliff during the night.

thewalk

“THE WALK”

This Cure jam features some brilliantly 80’s riffs and synths and its music video proceeds to go more and more off rails as the song rolls out. The presence of that baby doll just gets weirder and weirder the longer you watch…

boysdont

“BOY’S DON’T CRY”

This music video is doesn’t feature the band themselves (not counting their shadows), three children instead take the place of the band in this 1986 clip. One of our absolute favourite tunes.

inbetween

“IN BETWEEN DAYS”

This song is quintessential Cure, to me and the music video is a great example too. Darker colours splattered with bursts of neon, while Smith establishes some semblance of focus while the camera’s point of view shots throws everything else out of whack.
