Fresh Friday Five #012: Neko Pink, Yasmin Hosseini, The Belafontes

Another week, another Friday Fresh Five this week featuring dream pop from Canberra’s Neko Pink and Bristol’s Swimming Girls, neo-soul from Melbourne’s Approachable Members of Your Local Community and some rock to round it out from Melbourne’s The Belafontes.

Neko Pink (Canberra)

Australian dream pop doesn’t get much better than this. Canberra’s Neko Pink bring together melancholic 80s synths with modern indie pop. They’ve made a pretty big impact on the local Canberra scene, recently supporting Moaning Lisa for their single launch. They’ve only released two songs so far, but keep your eyes peeled for new music as these up and comers hone their craft.

Approachable Members of Your Local Community (Melbourne)

New seven piece neo-soul outfit Approachable Members of Your Local Community (affectionately knows as Approachable Members) are bringing the funk back into indie pop. Their debut “Millennium Queen” is a soulful, dance worthy tune with a catchy hook, perfect for your end of summer playlist. Approachable Members lives up to it’s unique band name, the seven guys have a great sense of humour which translates to a great live show.

The Belafontes (Melbourne)

Melbourne rockers The Belafontes have been on the scene for a few years now, with two lineup changes and a fluctuating sound, the group struggled to find their legs. Now with front woman Jess Belafonte taking up multiple instruments as well as lead vocals, the group has found their sound on new self produced track “Cruel”. Their fun energy and thrashing tracks make them a great live band, so if your in Melbourne check them out.

Yasmine Hosseini (Perth)

Up and coming indie rock artist Yasmine Hosseini has been writing music since she was nine. The Perth based songwriter’s guitar heavy tracks are reminiscent of 70s folk rock, and her vocals are as daring as they are delicate. Hosseini self produces her tracks from her home studio, making for a lo fi, organic listening experience.

INTERNATIONAL PICK

Swimming Girls (Bristol, UK)

Pop four piece Swimming Girls are releasing some interesting material out of Bristol’s pop scene. Brought together as part of a musical project whilst the members were studying separately, the group found commonality in their love of 80s pop culture. Inspired by the works of Cyndi Lauper and David Lynch, Swimming Girls are delivering dark dream pop of the best kind.
