Forget the Headliners: 6 Splendour Acts You Can’t Miss before 6PM

Splendour in the Grass is back again for another year this week, returning to North Byron Parklands from the 20th-22nd of July. If you’re heading out to Splendour for the first time, chances are you’re going to have a helluva bender – what a stacked line up to pop your SITG cherry!

As we all get our gumboots and tents ready for the big trip, here are five acts that may not be headliners, but are ones you can’t miss:

Superorganism

One of my favourite performances at this year’s Primavera Festival in Barcelona (and we were lucky enough to catch up with them at The Great Escape just a week or so earlier), were London based outfit Superorganism. With festival ready songs, and an energy of a live performance to match (with killer visuals to boot), they are a must for everyone’s schedule. You can check them out at 2.45pm on the Saturday.

DZ Deathrays

It’s the 10th Anniversary of one of our favourite bands, playing 3.30pm on the Friday – which is pretty sweet, because it’s our 10th anniversary too! This Brisbane duo, who now play as a trio, have honed their craft and become one of Australia’s best rock outfits, both on record and on stage. And given the anniversary, we think this Splendour set will be pretty special too. We’re also hoping from a Murray from The Wiggles cameo.

Soccer Mommy

Making an exclusive appearance at the festival are one of the world’s biggest buzz acts right now, Soccer Mommy (pictured in header), the much talked about project of Sophie Allison. I caught the NYC-via-Nashville group at The Great Escape earlier this year and was impressed by the outfit’s music, particularly in tracks like “I Wanna Be That” – though don’t expect them to blow your mind. Rather, this is a rare chance to be on top of the “next big thing”, and get your taste of their latest tunes, before anyone else in Australia. You can catch them on Sunday at 1.45pm.

All Our Exes Live in Texas

Australian folk outfit All Our Exes Live in Texas are one of the best live experiences you’ll ever have. Blending hilarious banter with beautiful music, it’s set to be one of the highlights of the weekend, as the girls return from a MASSIVE overseas jaunts that’s seen them take over the UK, the US and everywhere in between. They’re playing at 5.30pm on Saturday.

Amyl & The Sniffers

I can’t believe they’re playing at 12pm on Sunday. Your hangover won’t know what hit you. But do NOT miss this act. They’re one of the best live acts going anywhere in the world right now, and they just so happen to be from Australia. Like many of these acts, they’re returning from shows overseas where they’re slowly but surely showing themselves to be an act to be reckoned with.

Alice Ivy

Since debuting in 2016, Alice Ivy has been quietly taking the music scene by storm, having performed at SXSW, Listen Out, Groovin’ the Moo and Vivid. Taking a break from nationally touring alongside The Jungle Giants as a supporting act, be sure to catch her at 12.15pm on Friday, helping kick off Splendour 2018.
