Behind the scenes with WAAX as they put together Wild & Weak

Tomorrow, WAAX releases their new EP Wild & Weak, certain to be some of their most evocative and energetic material yet. Ahead of the release, these loveable punks have shared a special behind the scenes look of the making of Wild & Weak, in the gallery below!

Hit play on the lead single below and check it out.

Griff.
We were working day and night, both in our day jobs and in the studio. It got pretty exhausting. On this occasion the seemingly endless routine got the better of Maz, however still eager to contribute where she could.
The bass was an importance counterpart in creating space and making the songs breathe.
In between takes the studio would become a boiling pot of creativity and ideas.
Drums were explored creatively. We wanted the drums to be driving yet contemporary while being Subtle yet memorable.
Chris tracking guitar on ‘You Wouldn’t Believe’ and ‘Nothing Is Always’. We would end up scraping all but a few guitar parts on ‘You Wouldn’t Believe’ in this session and re-recorded parts that characterized the song more accurately.
A few effect pedals, each with a unique voice.
Experimenting with guitar tone and effects was a significant contributor in making the guitars sound exciting.
A lot of work went into tracking guitars. We would have extensive discussions about the purpose of the guitar in a song or how to keep the sound contemporary.
The process was simple. 1) Track beds, 2) Track Drums, 3) Track cymbals, 4) Track Bass, 5) Track guitars, 6) Track vocals, 7) Track overdubs. This photo is Step 1.
Maz having a shred on the piano.
Most of the recording would take place after work and well into the night. In this photo Maz is settling for a big night of writing and tracking.
This is Miro Mackie – Engineer, Producer, purveyor of fine wines and band/life coach amongst other things. Miro was instrumental in the making of this record. We bonded over scotch and snacks. Beside Miro is Aidan Hogg (Assistant Engineer) another legend in his own right.
Tracking vocals for songs ‘Wild & Weak’ and ‘You Wouldn’t Believe’. This would be our final night at The Plutonium.
We’ve definitely started to become more efficient at what we do. We were working against the clock – but somehow it didn’t feel terribly rushed – if anything, the sense of immediacy helped characterise the songs.
In the early sessions of this record, the songs were super green and the studio was ground zero. We would take our untamed scrapings of different concepts; make a calculated guess as to how they’ll blossom for us; and then pick the perfect moment to unleash them to coalesce.

Wild & Weak is released tomorrow, June 2nd. Stay up to date with WAAX here.
