Behind the Scenes at WAMCon & WAMFest with Odette Mercy!

While FOAM brought us some snapshots of their time at WAMFest’s Saturday Spectacular, today we get some insights into the experiences of another showcase artist in Odette Mercy. With her band The Soul Atomics, she’s become a favourite of ours this year, churning out music and live shows well worth your time.

WAMCon was a massive weekend here in Perth, from the WAM Awards, to the Conference, a boat party and the Saturday Spectacular. Here’s a little diary of my time at WAM.

L-R: Odette Mercy, Joni Hogan, Abbe May, Grace Barbe, Tara John.
Thursday – WAM Awards, Claremont Showgrounds. The Green Room.

I attended the WAM Awards as part of Abbe May‘s Gospel Choir along with Joni Hogan (Joni In The Moon). Abbe took home two WAM Awards this year – Best Female Vocalist and Best Single for her new track “Doomsday”. What a haul for Abbe! So well deserved!! Here we are catching up with some of WA’s best musicians in the Green Room. Grace Barbe and NLPA 2016 nominee for Best Instrumentalist, Tara John.

L-R: WAM Nominee (Best World Music Act) Quenton Thony (Soukuss Internationale) & WAM Winner (Best Keyboard/Synth Musician) Timothy Nelson.

No late gig is really done right unless you end on the old late night feast. Choices are: The Moon Cafe/Uncle Billy’s/Billy Lee’s or City Garden. Late late night/early morning muso feast at City Garden.

Saturday – Homebase.

How to roll out your day. With some 80 bands playing over the course of WAM’s Saturday Spectacular, no one loses.

Saturday – BLOCK PARTY, Roe St Car Park.

So we decided to keep our Homebase the Block Party.

001odette4

WAM had Roe St carpark decked out with a bar, food trucks, info booths and a experience/educational photo booth in the form of a combi-van. It’s hard to fit us all in there. But we did it…for you.

Beni Bjah – Nominee for Best Indigenous Act gettin’ the Block Party off to a blazing start. He had that bass bumping!

Hip Hop band PREMISS had a collective of feature artists sharing the stage with them. Shout out to Brendan Scott Grey for his work on all of the writing and arranging. Honestly… how you do it, I’ll never know. Their guests were (L-R): Aaron Malone (WWNTR), Marksman, Coin Banks and Alex Ford.

WAM Most Popular Live Act – POW Negro took to the stage and it was packed. The energy was thick and thriving. You can understand why people are digging on them so hard.

But it was this guy that took the cake for me. Mathas always kills and his charisma and talent draw you in on some other level. And if you aren’t on that level yet… he’ll come to you.

Keep up to date with Odette Mercy and her band, The Soul Atomics, HERE.
