Anywhere Boy – a closer look at the debut EP from Melbourne’s Francesca Gonzales

Fusing electronic-soul, pop and R&B influences, Melbourne artist Francesca Gonzales is working with a indulgent and enticing creative melting pot. Her latest single, “Memories”, is indicative of a highly promising talent, an early taste of her solo work after years of playing with Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird.

Gonzales’ debut EP, Anywhere Boy, is being launched tonight in Melbourne at Boney but ahead of the gig, we take a little peek closer at this cool collection of music…

__

This group of songs is about a time in my life where I was pretty lost, trying to figure out who I was and what the hell was going on.

HOPE

“Hope” was written looking back on a hopeless situation with a newfound perspective, becoming stronger and more resilient. Written over four years, the song starts off brooding, gradually building to become bolder and optimistic.

MEMORIES

“Memories” was about the realisation that life is completely out of our control. When we are feeling incredibly overwhelmed sometimes all we can do is look back at moments in our life that will pull us through the hard times we face.

The song is upbeat and repeats the same line, “Looking back, all we have are memories”, because I wanted the audience to listen to the song and come away embracing the fact that everything we do instantly turns into a memory – so fuck it and have fun!

ANYWHERE BOY

I had a big crush on this boy who was so talented but he didn’t do anything about it. “You’re never gonna go anywhere boy”. The relationship was a bit of a head-fuck, but it really made me look at the person I was and wanted to be. I wanted to go somewhere. This song is the climax of the emotional roller coaster that the EP represents.

BLACK SAND

This song is the cleansing song. After all the heartache and anger I just decided to let it all go. “Black Sand” is a metaphor for all the shit that has happened, and as the song builds it’s being washed away. The song finishes with a final grove, which is the new start.
