5 Must See Shows For Music Lovers at The Adelaide Cabaret Festival

Get ready for a smorgasbord of glitz and glamour, because the Adelaide Cabaret Festival is back for yet another year and it’s looking as fabulous as ever! Running from the 8th-23rd of June, this year’s program is bursting with musical gems- from shiny show tunes to unexpected cover bands. Music lovers will be spoilt for choice, so we’ve made your life easier and picked 5 shows not to miss!

You Am I Plays Spinal Tap

On one hand you have You Am I, one of Australia’s best rock ‘n’ roll bands who delivered this 90’s tune. On the other you have Spinal Tap, the fictional band from Rob Reiner’s 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, which hilariously pocked fun at rock ‘n’ roll musicians.  What do you get when you put the two hands together? A cover act you didn’t know you wanted to see, but now you think about it, you’ve definitely always wanted too!

Playing a set of Spinal Tap songs, You Am I are ‘challenging themselves to deliver the Tappest moment of moments.’ Be sure to dress for the occasion and get ready to rock!

Playing from June 8- 10 at the Dunstan Playhouse, tickets on sale here.

The Legend of Queen Kong, Episode II in Outer Space

Who is Queen Kong? Part rock, part ape, part immortal mythological being- she is the neo-punk cabaret diva created by Yana Alana (award winning cabaret performer and alter ego of Melbourne local Sarah Ward).  Playing its world premiere at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, The Legend of Queen Kong, Episode II, is part of a new epic rock trilogy that tells the story of Queen Kong’s journey through space and time.

Featuring her band, The HOMOSapiens, Queen Kong will deliver out of this world show tunes, promising to be a ‘supernova spectacular.’

Playing from June 22-23 at the Space Theatre, tickets on sale here.

The Cat Empire…with Special Guests

No matter how many times you see The Cat Empire, you are always guaranteed to have a fun time. Packed with explosive sounds, vibrant colour and exotic flavours their music seeps into your skin like sunshine on a beautiful day. Joined by a special guest line up of cabaret artists for one night only, if you’re looking for a festival pick that will get you dancing and bring the party, this is the one for you.

Playing June 10 at the Festival Theatre, tickets on sale here.

Lea Delaria Live in Concert

If Lea DeLaria looks familiar it’s probably because you’ve binge watched her on Netflix. Best known as Big Boo from the hit series Orange is the New Black, Lea is more than just your fictional badass inmate. With her razor sharp wit and sassy stage demeanour, Lea has been hailed a cabaret queen with velvety vocals.

Performing songs from her latest album House of David: delaira+bowie=jazz, the show is described as the perfect blend of comedy and song that will have you cackling with laughter.

Playing June 11 at the Festival Theatre, tickets on sale here.

Them There Eyes

Award winning vocalist Emma Pask, charming musician Jamie MacDowell, beatbox instrumentalist Tom Thum and looping wizard Adam Page come together to explore the 2018 Cabaret festival’s theme, ‘eyes open.’ Mixing originals and covers, collectively they promise to reimagine sounds with jazz heart, vocal percussion and a loop pedal.  Feel like treating your ears? What better way to do so than with sweet, sweet soulful tunes.

Playing June 16-17 at the Festival Theatre Stage, tickets on sale here.
